INFLUENCE OF POSITIVE PARENTING ON SELF ESTEEM AND PROSOCIAL BEHAVIOUR OF PUBLIC SECONDARY STUDENTS IN IJEBU ODE LOCAL GOVERNMENT
Abstract
The research examined the positive influence of parenting on pro social behavior and self-esteem of students in Ijebu Ode Local government. The study was guided by three null hypothesis. The study is descriptive research. The population of this study consist of all students in twenty-six (26) public secondary schools in Ijebu Ode. Multi stage sampling procedure was adopted. The total sample size is three hundred (300). Questionaire was used in gathering data for the research, split half method was used to validate the instrument with reliability coefficient of 0.75. Percentage was used to present the demographic data. The generated hypotheses were analysed using t-test and ANOVA at 0.05 level of significance. The results of the study identified significant positive effects of positive parenting on self-esteem and prosocial behavior of students in Ijebu Ode local government. Furthermore, there is also combine effects of positive parenting on self- esteem and prosocial behavior among students in Ijebu Ode local government. However, there is low level of prevalence of prosocial behaviour among students in Ijebu Ode local government. In conclusion this study identifies the importance of positive parenting in moulding children self-esteem and development of their prosocial behaviour. Therefore, as a result of the findings of the study, it was advocated that there is need for educators to evolve programs that will enhance positive parenting skills and specific programs for secondary school students to improve their prosocial behaviour and self-esteem. There is need for government, religious bodies, civil society, school counsellors to embark on awareness on significance of prosocial behavior among the youths as a way to salvage the country from imminent collapse.
