Abstract

This paper examines Counsellors’

role in the Conflict Resolution of Adolescents and their Peers in Abia State. Adolescents are individuals in the transitional stage of development between childhood and adulthood, typically ranging from ages 10 to 19, characterized by rapid physical, emotional, cognitive, and social changes. Adolescents often experience conflicts with their peers,

which can negatively affect their emotional well-being, academic performance, and social

relationships. School counselors play a vital role in helping adolescents resolve conflicts,

manage emotions, and build positive interpersonal relationships. The paper identifies common sources and types of adolescent conflicts and highlights key counseling strategies such as negotiation, mediation, dialogue, emotional regulation training, and problem-solving techniques.

The paper reveals that when counsellors provide a safe, supportive, and structured environment, adolescents are better equipped to communicate effectively, develop empathy, and resolve disputes peacefully. The paper suggests the implementation of structured conflict resolution programs in schools, regular counseling interventions, and increased government support for functional counseling centers to enhance adolescents’ social and emotional development.
