PERCEIVED ROLE OF COUNSELLING TECHNIQUES IN COMMUNITY CONFLICT RESOLUTION: A PATH TO HARMONY
Keywords:

Community conflicts continue to be a barrier to social cohesion, development, and sustainable
peace, arising from unmet emotional, social, and relational needs. This paper examines the
perceived role of counselling techniques in community conflict resolution and their contribution to fostering harmony, reconciliation, and cooperative engagement. Drawing on theoretical frameworks such as Human Relations Theory, the Person-Centred Approach, and Conflict Transformation Theory, the paper examines how counselling promotes empathetic communication, mediation, negotiation, emotional healing, and dialogue within community settings. Through a comprehensive theoretical analysis, the study demonstrates that counselling not only addresses immediate disputes but also transforms underlying relational issues,
strengthens trust, and cultivates a culture of forgiveness, dialogue, and coexistence. Findings indicate that integrating counselling approaches into community leadership and traditional systems enhances these structures' capacity to manage conflicts holistically and sustainably. The paper concludes that counselling serves as a catalyst for sustainable peace through relational
resilience, social cohesion, and collective well-being. It offers suggestions for institutionalising counselling programmes, developing leadership capacity, and promoting community participation to ensure long-term harmony. This paper contributes to understanding counselling as a strategic tool for conflict resolution and peace building across diverse community contexts.
