COUNSELLING APPROACHES AND STRATEGIC CONFLICT TECHNIQUES FOR ENHANCING INTERPERSONAL HARMONY IN EDUCATIONAL SETTINGS IN OWERRI MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF IMO STATE, NIGERIA.

Abstract

This study investigated the effectiveness of counselling approaches and strategic conflict

management techniques in fostering interpersonal harmony within educational settings. With rising incidents of interpersonal conflicts in schools among students, teachers, and administrators, the research aimed to explore how guided counselling and conflict resolution strategies can promote peaceful coexistence and enhance relationships. A descriptive survey research design was adopted, involving a sample of 150 respondents (students, teachers, and

counsellors) selected from a population of 300 in secondary schools in Imo State, Nigeria. The

instrument used for data collection was a structured questionnaire titled "Counselling and Conflict Management Questionnaire (CCMQ)". Data were analyzed using mean scores, chi-square, independent t-test, and ANOVA. Findings revealed that individual and group counselling, cognitive-behavioural, and humanistic approaches significantly contribute to interpersonal harmony. Similarly, conflict resolution techniques such as collaboration, mediation, and compromise were found to be highly effective. Significant differences existed in the perception of students and teachers regarding these techniques. Based on the results, the study recommends the institutionalization of school-based counselling programs and training of educators in conflict resolution strategies to enhance a harmonious and productive educational environment.
